American drivers are facing record fuel costs this Labor Day as the ongoing conflict with Iran and disruptions to global oil supplies continue to push energy prices higher.
The national average price for regular gasoline reached about $4.15 per gallon on Labor Day, according to AAA data cited by U.S. media. That is nearly $1 more than a year ago and above the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 per gallon set in 2012.
Diesel prices have climbed even more sharply, reaching roughly $5.90 per gallon, putting additional pressure on trucking, shipping and businesses that depend heavily on transportation.
Iran Conflict Puts Pressure on Oil Markets
A major factor behind the surge is the continuing disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments.
Renewed U.S.-Iran attacks involving vessels in and around the strait have increased concerns that Middle Eastern oil supplies could remain constrained.
Oil markets reacted quickly on Monday. Brent crude traded above $97 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed above $92, bringing global oil prices closer to the psychologically important $100 level.
Americans Could Feel the Impact Beyond the Gas Pump
Higher fuel prices don’t affect drivers alone.

When diesel and transportation costs rise, businesses can face higher expenses for moving food, consumer goods and packages across the country. Some of those additional costs can eventually be passed on to consumers.
U.S. refineries are also operating at very high utilization levels, leaving the market vulnerable to refinery outages, extreme weather or hurricane-related disruptions.
Will Gas Prices Come Down?
Energy Secretary Chris Wright has said the administration is working to bring fuel costs lower and pointed to futures markets suggesting gasoline could become cheaper in the coming months.
However, uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict and oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz means the outlook remains unpredictable.
For millions of Americans finishing their summer travel this Labor Day, one thing is already clear: filling the tank has become significantly more expensive.
