A major communications failure caused widespread travel disruption across the U.S. East Coast on Monday, temporarily halting incoming flights at some of the nation’s busiest airports and contributing to thousands of delays nationwide.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily stopped traffic at major airports including John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport.

Nearly 4,000 flights were delayed and around 500 were canceled across the United States, according to flight-tracking data cited by Reuters.
What Caused the Disruption?
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said a telecommunications circuit serving an air traffic control facility in Philadelphia failed.
When officials attempted to switch to a backup connection, they discovered that a backup fiber-optic line had been accidentally damaged by a construction crew in New Jersey.
The communications problem affected frequencies used by the Philadelphia air traffic control facility, which handles traffic for several airports in the region.
Newark Hit Especially Hard
Newark Liberty International Airport was among the hardest-hit airports.
More than 1,000 Newark flights had been delayed or canceled, while flight-tracking data showed average delays reaching roughly 112 minutes during the disruption.

Some flights were also diverted to other airports.
Traffic later began resuming at some airports as officials worked to restore communications, but disruptions continued at others.
Disruption Comes During Major Week in New York
The outage came as approximately 130 world leaders and dozens of ministers were arriving in New York for the high-level meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.
The incident also renewed attention on the aging U.S. air traffic control system. Congress approved $12.5 billion in 2025 for upgrades and increased controller hiring.
The FAA said flights would only resume when officials were satisfied that the affected airspace could operate safely.
What Travelers Should Do
Passengers traveling through New York, Newark, Philadelphia or other affected East Coast airports should check directly with their airline for the latest information about their specific flight.
With delays and cancellations changing throughout the day, travelers should confirm their flight status before heading to the airport.
