Rivian Recalls Nearly 99,000 EVs in the U.S. Over Rearview Camera Issue

Rivian is recalling nearly 99,000 electric vehicles in the United States because of a software issue that can interfere with the rearview camera display while drivers are backing up.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers 98,828 vehicles.

The problem occurs when a notification can obstruct the rearview camera image while the vehicle is in reverse, potentially reducing the driver’s view behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

Which Rivian Models Are Affected?

The recall affects certain:

🚙 2022–2027 Rivian R1S
🛻 2022–2026 Rivian R1T
⚡ 2027 Rivian R2

Owners of affected vehicles won’t necessarily need to visit a service center.

Rivian Has a Software Fix

Rivian has released an over-the-air software update to correct the issue.

The update will be provided free of charge as the official recall remedy.

OTA updates allow automakers to fix certain software problems remotely, similar to updating the operating system on a smartphone.

Why the Camera Problem Matters

Rearview cameras have become an important safety feature in modern vehicles, helping drivers see pedestrians, objects and other vehicles behind them.

If part of the image is obstructed at the wrong moment, drivers may have less information available when reversing.

That is why U.S. safety regulators determined that the issue required a recall.

Software Is Becoming a Bigger Part of Car Recalls

Modern vehicles increasingly rely on large displays and software for everything from navigation and entertainment to safety systems and vehicle controls.

That creates new possibilities for automakers — but also new types of problems.

Unlike many traditional recalls involving mechanical components, some software-related issues can now be repaired remotely without replacing physical parts.

Rivian’s latest recall is one example of that shift.

What Should Rivian Owners Do?

Owners should check whether their specific vehicle is included in the recall and make sure the latest Rivian software update is installed.

The repair is being provided at no cost.
