Huawei Says AI Chip Demand Is Outpacing Supply as Nvidia Rivalry Heats Up

China’s Huawei says demand for its artificial intelligence computing technology is now exceeding supply as the company accelerates its challenge to Nvidia in the booming AI chip market.

Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu said demand for the company’s AI computing equipment in China has grown so rapidly that current production cannot fully keep up.

The surge comes as U.S. export restrictions continue to limit China’s access to some of Nvidia’s most advanced AI processors, pushing Chinese technology companies to develop and adopt domestic alternatives.

Huawei is also preparing its next generation of Ascend AI chips. According to Reuters, the company plans to accelerate the rollout of the Ascend 960DT and 960PR processors in 2027.

But Huawei isn’t focusing only on individual chips.

The company is developing massive computing systems designed to connect huge numbers of processors together, allowing them to handle increasingly demanding AI models and workloads.

The developments highlight how the global AI race is increasingly becoming a semiconductor race, with the United States and China competing over the technology needed to train and operate the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence systems.

Nvidia remains a major force in AI computing, particularly because of its powerful chips and widely used CUDA software ecosystem. But Huawei’s expansion shows that China is continuing its push to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor technology.

As demand for AI computing power continues to explode, competition between American and Chinese chip ecosystems could become one of the most important technology battles of the coming years.
